RNZAF Bristol Beaufort

489 Squadron RNZAF was formed at Leuchars in Scotland on August 12, 1941 and 20 Bristol Beauforts Mk.Is were allocated, but only 5 or so were actually taken on strength from August 1941 to January 1942.

At the time, Beauforts were in short supply and available UK aircraft were desperately required for transfer to the Mediterranean Theatre. As a result, no further Beauforts were available for the Squadron to become fully operational on the type. As a consequence, 489 Squadron temporary converted to Blenheim IVF's from January 1942 to March 1942 before converting to Hampden T.B.1's.

The Hampdens served in 489 Squadron from March 1942 until December 1943 before converting to Beaufighter X's that saw service in the Squadron from November 1943 to June 1945
