Rec 3AD ex USA 08/02/43. Rec 2OTU ex 3AD 07/03/43. Coded "300"????. Accident 18/04/43 whilst turning across the runway , the tail wheel and then the port u/c retracted causing extensive damage. NFDs. Repaired within Unit. Accident 1450hrs 26/07/43 when detailed for a Air to Ground Gunnery exercise at Gol Gol Gunnery range, the pilot on his first diving attack appeared to have failed to pull out too late. The aircraft squashed onto the ground past the target, a half mile north of target, then zoomed up two or three hundred feet, rolled over, spun in and burst into flames. Duty Range Officer, P/O M D O’Mara Serv#402876 ran over to the scene, finding the pilot still strapped into his seat, some twenty yards from burning aircraft. Accident 06/10/43 on return from a six aircraft formation flight from the training area some ten to twelve miles away, found a severe storm covering the base at Merauke. After misjudging his landing approach the pilot heavily applied his brakes on the steel matting and was unable to retard his speed and hit a drain at the end of the strip. Operational Loss 1030hrs 05/12/44 when as one of 4 x P-40Ms was doing a watercraft sweep over Kokas, Fak Fak and Ransiki per Duty KAM 73. Whilst attacking stores at east end of Seckar (Sakar) Bay, the a/c was struck by debris following the strafing of a galvanised iron hut by the leader of the section. With the aircraft damaged, the pilot performed a successful ditching 1.5miles west of Ogar Island, Mc Cleur Gulf, DNG. He then inflated his raft and climbed aboard. Aircover by both Kittyhawks and Beaufighters was provided until 1700hrs and these forestalled Japanese shore troops in their attempt to reach the pilot. Two watercraft were sunk by the strafing and all enemy personnel were killed. Pilot; F/Lt John "Mac" Edward MacLeod Serv#416591 was classified as Missing. Post war, after interviewing by No 2 Aust War Crimes Section of a Japanese Naval Lt who had ordered a OR(Ordinary Rank) on the same day. It was determined that he had been captured the following day after landing at Ogar island and was believed executed by sword on or after 19/12/44. Further on, his executioner was Leading Seaman Tobimatsu as ordered by Sub lt Suzuki Yutaka(Kokas Det, 25 Special Naval Base Force).Abel Seaman Tobimatsu died of Malaria in December 1945. Operational Loss 01/12/44 when part of a 7 a/c mission to bomb and strafe Moemi Strip, DNG when pilot of A29-312, flying as Number 2 in a section of four aircraft had just pulled out of his dive and noticed that his engine was giving trouble. He decided to force land immediately and selected a spot on the western end of the strip and brought his aircraft down on its belly. After skidding 100 yards, the aircraft came to a rest with black smoke rising from the engine. Teh pilot got out with maps and went to a safe distance. There was no fire so he returned to the aircraft, finding the W/T still working. He called up and was told "to regain formation". He removed a 0.50cal machinegun and used that to smash the cockpit instrumentation and to attempt to set fire to the aircraft. He was told prior to do this and move to the coast, only one mile away. Two covering P-40s destroyed the aircraft with their strafing, after which returned to base to collect two bundles of supplies and an Owen SM Carbine (with ammo) which was dropped some time later to him. After some escape and evade the local Japanese , earlier hours of the next day, he inflated his dingy and moved off shore as arranged prior with notes from his supply drop. A LCM was over the wreck site some three minutes later but was unable to located aircraft or pilot. The wreck was located the following day, with the body retrieved on the 11/01/45. Having informed by Jackson's Tower  some forty miles from Aerodrome, that the cloud base was 2-2500feet there, they were instructed fly straight up Bootless Inlet. F/O Wright was instructed to form his section into line astern, but he was unable to pick up the leading section before entering cloud. He decided to turn out of the cloud over the water with No 2 of his section also. However No 3 continued on and eventually landed at Jackson.  After another attempt to fly up on instruments up Bootless Inlet  he did not break cloud, and turned back again . He was joined by No 2 (W/O Andrews) and after circuling around he decided to make a forced landing on Dango Island. After three runs across the beach, he decided to make a normal wheel down landing. After running normally for 2-300 yards, the a/c swung down the slope of the beach with the starboard wheel caught in the water, causing the aircraft to overturn in about three feet of water. Pilot stated after dropping his bomb, his engine began to run rough, with fuel pressure requiring fuel boost pump operation. He followed the Kaitere River  until he was four miles south of Toegrama Village. Strangely, He did not use his radio to advise his flight leader of his issues. He climbed to 5000feet in case he had to bale out and continued on. Hopelessly lost, with fuel getting low and lost, he prepared to ditch near Seven islands, near the most south easterly atoll measuring 80 feet in diameter in Mccluer Gulf, Dutch New Guinea. He ditched successfully. After finally signaling a flight of B-25s, he was picked up by a Catalina on 07/10/44. After 10-15 minutes, oil pressure was about 4 lbs, glycol 120degrees with shudders shut, boost fell to 22 inch, and airscrew control in fixed pitch as revs fell off.   Approximately 80 miles from base, with two US Navy PT boats visible, jettison canopy which struck ear, rolled aircraft on back and bailed out. Approximately 200 yards after touch down, the port oleo leg collapsed, and the port mainplane struck the ground. The aircraft swung off the strip, the starboard leg collapsed, and the aircraft came to rest on the fuselage and mainplanes, just off the side of the strip.  The cause of the undercarriage failure was not ascertained, however the pilot, on training the tyre marks back along the landing run, the port main showed as having run through a pothole in the strip. Operational Loss  1537hrs 08/12/44  after returning from a bombing mission on Ransiki River Bridge(using a 1000lb bomb) the pilot observed slight AAA and noticed his oil presssure was 50lbs, coolant temperature 120 centigrade and oil temperature 97 centigrade. He opened the gill but the temperatures continue to rise. At approximately 18 miles from Kamiri Strip Noemfoor on a bearing of 220degrees magnetic and at a height of 2000 feet, the pilot baled out over Geelvink Bay. His dinghy was missing after experiencing a slight tug during his bale out. Another was dropped successfully by another aircraft. A ASR Catalina was alerted and arrived over the dinghy, but was unable to land due to a swell. A Rescue LCM was dispatched and arrived on scene the following day at 1330hrs. Earlier that day, aircraft began their search for the pilot and dinghy at first light, and the pilot was sighted at 0935hrs.  The USAAF Catalina attempted a landing at 1105hrs but crashed at the end of the landing run. Pilot then manually pumped down the undercarriage. He landed the a/c on his second attempt at Turnbull Strip resulting in the port undercarriage collapsing on landing. Note: As a result of a collision in the Caribbean Sea pending transit vis Panama Canal. Army Transport Ship  CH61 266,  ex Charleston 29/01/43: Blading LL-2-1 Destination Brisbane, CH61 /266 was named the USAT Northern Sword (1513/2648 tons Built 1918 owned by Sword SS Line Inc) ex Charleston South Carolina USA  /Balboa/Arrat on way to US Army (USA-SOS) in Australia carrying four RAAF P-40K and two P-40M Aircraft Crates left Charleston 09/01/43. Sunk in collision 08/02/43. Other ship was SS Fisher Ames 4374/7176tons on its way to Freemantle departed Balboa 13/02/43 after repairs  Arrived 26/03/43) (Hull# 0233 Type EC2 Liberty Ship) Those Kittyhawks would have been allocated serials in the 300 series (ie. A29-3**) and so the US serial numbers are included here and are 43-5409 and 43-5436. These Kittyhawks were from the batch of 60 P-40M-1s (Note; I'll tidy this up later post Sept 2025: GRB)
