The Pilot was instructed by W/T to land either at Mareeba or Cairns, which on receipt of this message at 12.00hrs, he altered course and asked for the cloud base at Cairns. Still in bad weather, the starboard emgine failed but continued on with the port engine at 500 feet until that failed. At 1300hrs a/c forced landed 15 miles east of Great Palm Island, some 40 miles north of Townsville. The crew were not strapped in on contact with the sea and thus suffered shock and abrasions. On alightment on the sea, the dingy failed to open on release cord was pulled, requiring the crew to chop out with an axe when it was discovered that the air bottle was not connected. With this and the hand pump being defective, it was blown up by mouth. The a/c sank after 3-5 minutes, and thus with the problem of inflating the dingy, they were unable to take any signalling devices or food with them, aside from one water bottle and one tin of dried rations. (This a was an issue due to overflying a/c that day does not see them, nor could they signal them). Towards evening, they drifted within 3 miles of Great Palm Island, however due to sighting 4-foot sharks (and later bigger ones circling the dingy), they did not swim for it. They were picked up some 33 hrs after ditching on the 11/12/43 in their rubber dingy by a merchant ship at 2200hrs (10.00pm), suffering shock and exposure. On arrival at Townsville, they were admitted to No 2 MRS and RTU by the 14/12/42. Crew: Pilot: P/O Peter Willoughy Serv#408898, Observer Sgt Lloyd George Benjamin* Serv#408953, WAGs Sgt Albert George Holtman Serv#406718 and Sgt Harry William Hudson Serv#406806 were suffering, abrasions, shock and exposure (Holtham possible fractured pelvis, though later found just a bruised right thigh). 05/01/43 Write off per AMSE File#9/1/611 Minute #1 dated 18/12/42. Even the A50 of 7 Sqn RAAF per Page 72 of 573 does mention all four. |

A crosswind between 40-45knots blowing in gusts 90º to the landing direction of strip. The pilot tried three unsuccessful attempts to land, but due to strong down currents , he aborted. With darkness fast approaching he made one last attempt with a normal approach, but with the cross wind swing to 45º behind, the a/c floated excessively , but finally touched down between 1/3 and 1/2 way down the runway. The pilot applied brakes severely, but were ineffective, and with the wind behind the a/c, the a/c ran off the end of the strip, luckily with speed, had crossed the 20-foot-deep ravine at the end caught fire in the port engine and eventually burned out.
